Every year, retirees discover that the place they love can no longer afford them. We’re living that question in real time, and we’re documenting every step so you can learn from our research, our mistakes, and our scouting trips.
Who we are
We’re Ken and Jean, a San Diego couple with a rare retirement challenge: Ken is already at retirement age, I’m a few years away, and we’re raising young kids. That rules out the traditional 55+ communities most retirement guides assume you’ll choose. We need a place that works for retirees and a family.
Why you should follow along
- Real research, not brochures. We compare cost of living, healthcare, community, and day-to-day life in Spain, the Philippines, and Pennsylvania, three places with very different tradeoffs.
- Insider perspective. Since 2010, we’ve worked with retirees from across the country at DreamWell Homes Realty in San Diego, so we know the questions people ask and the surprises they hit.
- Honest conversations. We interview professionals and people who have already made the move, then scout in person and report back.
- Your criteria matter. Everyone defines “the right place” differently. We’ll show you how to figure out yours, and eventually offer consulting to help.

A family business, built to last
We’re building MoveRetire as something we can one day pass on to our children. We hope it grows into a resource that helps retirees for decades.
Disclosure: MoveRetire is a separate venture from DreamWell Homes Realty. Our experience there informs what we share, but the two are not connected, and as we retire, our work at DreamWell will wind down while MoveRetire carries on. Views expressed here are our own.
